APIE Advanced Camp #04

On June, 2026, three ICN Lab members, Yoga Raditya Nala (Informatics Eng, 2023), Vincentia Melody Vivianne (Informatics Eng. 2023) and Akbar Fikri Abdillah (Informatics Eng. 2023), attended an Advanced Camp held by the Asia Pacific Internet Engineering Program (APIE) hosted by Keio University, at the SOI Asia Haneda Campus. The six-day program was attended by students from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, and Vietnam. The APIE Advanced Camp curriculum is co-designed with the Advanced IT Architect Development Association (AITAC), bringing together expertise from academia and industry. AITAC lecturers Yuji Sekiya and Seiichi Yamamoto accompanied the participants throughout the week, together with Shun Arima (Keio University) and Noriatsu Kudo (Keio University, APIE lead).

During the camp, participants worked in groups through hands-on activities, collaborative projects, and interactions with Internet professionals, designing and developing an online service from concept to proof of concept while putting into practice the knowledge and skills gained throughout their APIE learning journey.

- Day 1: Interop Tokyo 2026 ShowNet Tour

Participants began the week at Interop Tokyo 2026 and ShowNet. Held annually since 1994, Interop Tokyo is one of Japan's biggest Internet and ICT events. Guided by Takashi Tomine (ARENA-PAC, WIDE), they toured at ShowNet to explored the ShowNet environment and learned how large-scale networks are designed, operated, monitored, and maintained.

- Day 2: Computer Architecture – Play with Dockers

Explore core concepts of containers vs. virtual machines and the differences between development and production environments.

- Day 3: Fundamentals of Service – Database

Learn and configure MySQL to understand how database is used in large scale system.

- Day 4: Run and Monitor Your Service

Exercise with hands-on on monitoring technologies and understand the importance of log/data visualization

- Day 5: Resilient Infrastructure

Learn to design scalable, highly available services, exploring monitoring, redundancy, and hybrid deployments.

- Day 6: Meet the Internet Engineers

A closing gathering with APIE alumni, industry representatives, and academics in Japan. During the event, participants received their certificates of participation from Professor Jun Murai, celebrating the successful completion of the onsite camp before continuing their projects toward the final online presentation.

Beyond the technical material, the camp was a chance to see how the Internet is sustained by the people and organizations behind it, and to build connections across the Asia Pacific that outlast the week itself. Stay tuned for more from upcoming APIE Advanced Camp activities!
