ICN Lab Sharing Session Networking Lab 2025

Routing is one of the most important fundamentals in networking concepts. Unfortunately, many people, including students, often struggle with these key concepts. Coming from that fact, the Information Centric Networking (ICN) Laboratory held a sharing session titled “Networking Lab. Volume 1” on September 19th 2025. This event was supposed to discuss and share knowledge about intra-domain routing, i.e., static routing and OSPF routing. This event was held at the Faculty of Computer Science, Brawijaya University, Malang, with a total of 26 participants, grouped into five groups. For the very first time, ICN Lab. also released two initial Moodle courses, titled “Understanding Routing on The Internet” and “Intra-domain Routing”, which will be covered throughout this session. This event is led by two experienced speakers, Fauzan Ghaza Madani and Alfi Muhammad Ghifari.

The event started with an opening from the history of the Internet. Started from the Soviet’s satellite, “Sputnik” that drove the U.S. to create and fund ARPA (Advanced Research Project Agency), which later created ARPANET, the foundation of the internet itself. It started by connecting four universities at the time, which then later became available to the public. The participants were ensured to understand what is the internet from the history perspective, before diving deep into networking concepts, such as routing.

After that, participants started to learn about IPv4 and subnetting, and how they will manage their group’s internal networks. To ensure their understanding, ICN Lab. also provide a hands-on experience using an online networking simulator, GNS3 Server that can be accessed easily by all participants. This hands-on experience not only ensures their understanding, but also introduces them to the real world scenario where they need to think about how their internal networks interconnect using routers and switches. After a short break, participants started to learn about static routing and dynamic routing (OSPF), starting from how it actually works to multi area OSPF. Participants also have hands-on experience, where they need to connect networks they’ve been designing before using both static and OSPF routing.

In conclusion, Networking Lab. Volume 1 successfully provided participants with both the theoretical foundation and practical exposure to routing concepts. Through a combination of historical context, fundamental knowledge, and direct hands-on practice, the session not only clarified the principles of IPv4, subnetting, and routing, but also equipped students with the confidence to apply them in real scenarios. With strong engagement and the launch of ICN Lab’s first Moodle courses, this event marks a meaningful step toward building a sustainable learning environment for future networking studies.
